Steroids Description:

Steroids side effects can be a result of a short time use and a fewer from a long time use. Steroids or Winstrol is a brand of stanozolol tablets which is a synthetic derivative of testosterone. -Assessment of Hemoglobin and hematocrit must be done to avoid polycythemia in patients receiving high doses of winstrol.

-Steroids must not be given or decreased with anticoagualant.

-Precaution is also adhered to Geriatric patients as they are prone to prostatic hypertrophy.

-Should not be given to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Effects to Hepatic:

  • Cholestatic jaundice that if not treated leads to death
  • Hepatocellular neoplasms and peliosis hepatic

Effects to Genitourinary System:  

  • Organ enlargement
  • Frequent erections
  • Inhibition of testicular function
  • testicular atrophy
  • oligospermia
  • impotence
  • chronic priapism
  • epididymitis
  •  bladder irritability
  • For women includes menstrual irregularities.
  • Increased or decreased libido.

 

Effects to Central Nervous System:  

  • Habituation
  • Excitation
  • insomnia
  • depression.

Effects to the Gastrointestinal: 

  •  Nausea,
  • Vomiting
  •  diarrhea.

Hematologic side effects:

  • Includes bleeding especially those under anticoagulant therapy

Effects to reproductive system:

  • Gynecomastia in male
  • Deepening of the voice in women.
  • Hirsutism
  • baldness in women.

Effects to the Skin: 

  • Excessive Acne

Effects to the skeletal system:  

  • Premature closure of epiphyses in children
  • Bone fractures

Side effects to Fluid and Electrolytes:  

  • Edema,
  • sodium, chloride, potassium, phosphate, calcium  imbalance

Side effects to Metabolism: 

  • Decreased glucose tolerance
  • increased serum levels of low-density lipoproteins and decreased levels of high-density lipoproteins
  • increased creatine and creatinine excretion
  • increased serum levels of creatinine phosphokinase (CPK).
